Pet Parents Turn to AVCC’s 24/7 Emergency Team for Life-Saving Care

“I’m telling you, we were numb. I didn’t know what to say,” recalls Maria Amato, after learning her dog Reilly was very ill. “My veterinarian told me he had a medical emergency and I had to take him right away to Advanced Veterinary Care Center.”

Reilly, a 13-year-old Westie/Jack Russell mix, was struggling to urinate the day before. But, on this particular day, he was vomiting… a lot. It turns out, a large stone was blocking Reilly’s urethra (the tube that empties the bladder).

Upon arrival at AVCC, Maria, along with her husband Frank said, “he was deteriorating so quickly. I could see his ribs. He was extremely fragile. If he didn’t get help right away, he would have gone into septic shock. He was about to die.”

Doctors and nurses at Advanced Veterinary Care Center got right to work on Reilly. A cystotomy was performed to enter the bladder and remove the stone. A scrotal urethrostomy was also necessary to create an opening in the urethra.

“That is the best place,” says Frank of AVCC. “They were wonderful. I wish human hospitals were this good.” Maria was grateful not only for the expertise of the doctors and nurses, but also the level of communication. “The communication was fantastic every time. I’m one of those mothers,” she laughs. “I called many times and I was thinking they were going to get fed up with me. But, not even once. They were very patient. They called me back really fast each and every time.

Today, Maria and Frank say Reilly is like a new dog. “He has more energy than he’s had in a long time. He loves to chase squirrels and play with the big bull mastiff in the neighborhood,” they added. As for their experience at Advanced Veterinary Care Center Maria says, “The compassion the doctors and nurses had with Reilly and me was priceless. They really care about the animals and I could see it in their faces. It’s the best holiday present to have Reilly around. If it wasn’t for AVCC, he would be gone. They saved his life.”
