AVCC’s Team of Doctors and Nurses Work Quickly to Save the Sweet 7-year-old Dog
“I thought he was going to die before we got there,” recalls Jim Jackson as he rushed his dog Dobie to Advanced Veterinary Care Center near Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Just moments before, Dobie, a tiny Yorkie-Papillon mix, was attacked by a much larger dog.
“The dog grabbed Dobie and shook him like a dish rag. He had a punctured lung and intestines, broken ribs and so much more,” adds Jim, who sustained eight dog bites himself trying to get Dobie free.
In the car, Jim called ahead to AVCC to let them know he was on the way. “They met me in the parking lot and took him in right away.” Multiple doctors with various expertise from emergency, to surgery got to work on Dobie immediately. Advanced Veterinary Care Center has a unique approach to veterinary care, allowing doctors with various expertise to care for every pet. This collaborative environment among doctors lends to more successful outcomes.
AVCC’s Board Certified Veterinary Surgeon and Director of Surgery, Dr. Shiara Arulpragasam promised Jim she would do the very best she could. “I thought I was going to lose him,” recalls Jim. “I really did. My dogs are like my kids.” Dobie had to undergo two surgeries to repair dozens of issues, including multiple puncture wounds, collapsed lung, fractured ribs, and more. “Dr. A. is an amazing surgeon to work on something that small…that tiny of a dog,” adds Jim. “He made it through the night and the next day. They said he was a fighter.”
AVCC’s Emergency Doctor, Taelor Aasen, “was very helpful in keeping me informed,” adds Jim. “You would have thought it was her own dog the way she treated him. I would visit Dobie in the morning and evening and they let me stay as long as I wanted to. Everybody there at that hospital was very nice and very helpful and they called me twice a day whenever I wasn’t there. They were upfront on costs. They all loved Dobie and were taking photos of him. A human couldn’t get as good as treatment as they did with these animals. I would tell anybody if they have an emergency, this is the place to go. It’s a miraculous hospital.”
Today, Dobie is healing very well. “He is very active,” says Jim who laughs when he says he’s doing his best to keep Dobie calm while his ribs heal. “He already wants to jump on the sofa, play with his brother Buster, and get back to chasing squirrels!”
When he recalls the traumatic experience, Jim is so grateful he found Advanced Veterinary Care Center. “That is a wonderful hospital for animals that are injured, sick or whatever. They really care about their pets. They give you immediate attention and diagnosis of what they can do. I’ll tell you what, they don’t treat me that good at my own human hospital!”
