South Florida Rescue Cat Survives Against All Odds

Compassion and Expertise Give Dave a New Beginning

He was found, clinging to life by a good Samaritan with Hurricane Pets Rescue. Dave, a domestic shorthair cat was roaming with a feral cat colony in south Florida when the rescue discovered his skin was torn off from the back of his head to his shoulder blades. They rushed Dave to Advanced Veterinary Care Center’s 24-hour emergency and specialty hospital.

While there, Angels in Distress, a local rescue in Davie, FL took over the ownership of Dave and his life-saving care.

“He is so friendly,” says Linda Irons, with Angels in Distress. “He is not a feral cat,” adds Linda, who believes Dave was domesticated. The odds of survival however, were not looking good. In addition to his extensive wound, Dave was also septic, hypothermic, hypotensive, hypoglycemic, severely anemic and had fleas and hookworms. He also had feline immunodeficiency virus and azotemia which is a medical condition characterized by abnormally high levels of nitrogen containing compounds in the blood.

Dave’s care required blood transfusions, antibiotics, IV fluids and so much more. He was hospitalized for more than two weeks. “He survived that first night, which no one thought he would. But. you could hear him purr from another room,” said Linda. “He had so many issues. He’s a survivor!”

Linda says Steve, the owner of Angels in Distress, credits the expert team of emergency and critical care doctors, along with the staff at AVCC who saved Dave’s life. “He was so impressed with the care there. The nighttime doctors and the staff are extremely helpful and knowledgeable. They let Steve go in and observe, when he could. They kept him informed and explained very thoroughly the goal and what they want to do. Advanced always has a great, friendly staff, even the people up front. For emergencies, it’s like a human hospital. They treat every emergency like it’s life threatening.”

Today, Dave is a happy, healthy cat who loves to be pet, and loves to purr. Thanks to the kindness of dedicated pet rescues working together, along with the highly experienced team at Advanced Veterinary Care Center, Dave got his second chance. “They saved his life,” adds Linda. “They brought him from death to a perfectly healthy cat.”
