Doctors at Advanced Veterinary Care Center Work to Save Pac’s Life

“I saw blood coming out of his chest area and we were about 60 miles from any town,” recalls Ben D. of his Labrador Pac. Ben and Pac were duck hunting in Arkansas when Pac ran into a sharp piece of metal. “He was retrieving a bird and at the last second, he starting crying and ran back. He had a 6-inch-long gash about an inch deep on his shoulder,” adds Ben who then used his shirt as a tourniquet and carried Pac through the swamp. “I had just enough cell service to call a local veterinarian who sewed him up.”

Unable to fly home, Ben began a 17-hour drive back to south Florida. But serious complications developed. “I noticed he had bad swelling. I got home and took him to my local vet who said he needed to go to the ER right away. He was septic.” Ben rushed Pac to Advanced Veterinary Care Center in Davie. “In the waiting room, I see the inflammation grow all the way to his chest. It was rapidly taking over his body. He was not doing well.”

Doctors and nurses at AVCC went right to work on Pac. Multiple teams from emergency and critical care, to surgery worked together to save his life. His round the clock care involved multiple surgeries for extensive wound abscess, drainage care, debridement (removing dead or unhealthy tissue from a wound) and more. “His case was very serious,” adds Ben. “It was a few months process. If I had waited another half day to bring him in, he would be dead.”

Today, Pac is doing great and Ben is grateful for the care he received at Advanced Veterinary Care Center. “He is 100% back to himself. Everyone communicated well. They would call us with updates, versus me calling them. And, they were super positive and professional. It was a really good experience; everything from figuring out the issue to being clear and transparent. There were no curve balls throughout the whole process. Advanced Veterinary was unlike anything I had ever known was out there for small animals.”
