AVCC’s 24-Hour Emergency and Critical Care Team Guides Tito From Crisis to Recovery
“We were not sure he was going to make it,” recalls Trixie Richter of her dog Tito. Just a few days after major abdominal surgery at a local veterinary practice, Tito, a sweet 13-year-old chihuahua and terrier mix, was clearly not well.
“He had these fainting episodes. It happened on a Sunday when my primary veterinarian was closed,” she adds. So, Trixie called Advanced Veterinary Care Center’s 24-hour emergency and specialty hospital. “When I arrived, they were ready for me. They brought Tito right in and went into action.”
Tito was diagnosed with acute kidney injury and pancreatitis. He also had fluid between his lungs and chest, a low platelet count and other serious medical issues. “He was really not doing well,” says Trixie.
Tito spent a week in intensive care at AVCC, led by Board Certified Emergency and Critical Care Specialist, Dr. Brooke Newmans. With only about 1,000 emergency and critical care specialists in veterinary medicine around the world, Dr. Newmans joins an elite group of doctors who have undergone extensive training beyond their veterinary degree to earn this distinction.
“I didn’t know doctors like her exist,” adds Trixie. “We had long conversations start to finish. She was so thorough. I didn’t feel rushed at all. I haven’t even had that with human doctors. She talked to me in a way that I could understand. The whole staff was so incredible and really smart. You can tell they really love animals and they treated Tito like their own.”
“I would visit 3 times a day and the staff would all welcome me,” adds Trixie. “That made all the difference; their open door policy. There were many points when I left for the night and I had my speech with Tito telling him, I hope I see him again. It was the hardest thing to do, but I knew it was the best scenario being surrounded by these angels at AVCC.”
After spending a week with AVCC’s 24-hour critical care team, Tito was recovering and ready to go home in time to celebrate his 13th birthday!
Today, Tito is doing well and enjoys basking in the sun and going on walks in his stroller with Trixie, who is so grateful she found Advanced Veterinary Care Center in her time of need. “I can’t imagine going through what I went through, at any other place,” she adds. “If I hadn’t brought Tito in to AVCC, he wouldn’t have made it.”
About Board Certified Emergency and Critical Care Specialists:
(courtesy of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care)
Veterinarians who are board-certified by the ACVECC have undergone extensive training beyond their veterinary degree. This training includes several years of specialized residency in emergency and critical care followed by a rigorous examination process. This certification signifies these veterinarians have mastered the knowledge and skills necessary to treat animals in the most urgent and critical conditions. When a veterinarian has achieved board certification in the ACVECC, they are called Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (DACVECC).
ACVECC Diplomates are equipped to manage a wide range of emergency and critically ill patients, including severe trauma, acute illnesses, respiratory distress, cardiovascular emergencies, and complex surgical cases. They are trained to use advanced diagnostic tools and life-saving techniques, such as mechanical ventilation, blood transfusions, and intensive care monitoring. These specialists often work in animal emergency hospitals or intensive care units where they are prepared to respond swiftly and effectively to any situation that threatens an animal’s life.
