Pet Insurance is a Lifesaver for Luca and Siblings
“I thought he was going to die,” recalls a teary-eyed Chrissy Wright. Her sweet Italian Greyhound Luca was not well. “He was having diarrhea which was not unusual, but then it was accompanied by vomiting with blood,” she added. Chrissy took Luca to a veterinarian, but “he came back in horrible shape. He lost 3 pounds in 5 days. I had never seen him so sick.” So, she brought Luca right away to Advanced Veterinary Care Center to see Board Certified Veterinary Internal Medicine Specialist and Co-Medical Director, Dr. Jeff Toll. “Luca was totally lethargic. But, thank God Dr. Toll was a miracle man. He told me we would get this under control.”
Chrissy was hesitant at first to leave Luca overnight at a hospital. “My dogs are my children. They are my babies. But AVCC has people there all the time to care for the pets. When I left him there, I felt so confident and at ease. I knew he would be cared for. It was the first time I could exhale. They sent me photos. It was so awesome. They had a sweater on him at one point.”
An endoscopic biopsy revealed Luca has IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease). IBD is a chronic condition caused by inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract. “I came to visit him every day and it was the first time I could tell he was on the right track. He recovered so fast after being so sick for so long. They treated him and changed his diet.”
Given the level of Luca’s expert care, Chrissy is grateful she has pet insurance for Luca and all of her pets. “As soon as I bring pets home, I get insurance because I never want to be in a position where I say ‘I can’t afford that.’ For all my dogs, if ever there was a major surgery, it’s always been a yes. I had three dogs in a row with cancer…with hemangiosarcoma. I have saved at least $80,000 by having pet insurance.”
Today Luca is recovering well and doing much better. “He is eating well, says Chrissy. “He is a lover and loves to kiss and jump into people’s arms. Tormenting the mailman is another hobby. Luca is security patrol of the property.”
And, as for her experience at Advanced Veterinary Care Center, Chrissy says she won’t take her pets anywhere else. “As a professional pet sitter and volunteer for Italian Greyhound Rescue, I have gone to a lot of veterinarians all over south Florida. From my house, I can get to at least four, 24-hour emergency vets and I have been to all of them. Advanced Veterinary Care Center is the only place I will go. I tell everyone not to go anywhere else. I have never felt a peace like this in my heart when I leave my pets with Advanced. When I walk in the door, they shout ‘Luca’ and love him up. They love pets. They care. I hope this makes sense, but at Advanced Veterinary Care Center, I like to say that Luca was not just cared for…but he is cared about.”
