FAQs About Our Oncology Services

What do I do next now that my pet has been diagnosed with cancer?

Receiving a cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming, but there are ways to help you navigate the situation and explore treatment options. We recommend scheduling an appointment with a board certified veterinary oncologist, a specialist in treating cancer in pets, who can guide you through the next steps. Our goal is to provide the necessary information and support to ensure you can make informed decisions and take proactive measures for your pet’s comfort and well-being.

How long does it take to schedule my pet’s first oncology appointment?

In general, initial oncology consults are scheduled within a week’s time and sometimes sooner. Rest assured that if your pet’s diagnosis requires urgent attention, we will prioritize your visit and ensure you are scheduled as quickly as possible. Your pet’s health and comfort are our top priorities, and we are committed to providing the support and care you need during this time.

What should I expect at my first appointment?

At the start of your visit, a technician will greet you and gather a detailed history of your pet’s current condition. This information will then be relayed to the oncologist, who will review your pet’s medical record and discuss the diagnosis and available treatment options with you. If necessary, additional diagnostic tests may be recommended to ensure the best treatment plan. In most cases, if you choose to proceed with chemotherapy, we are able to administer the first dose during this initial visit, except in cases where your pet has recently undergone surgery or if critical diagnostic results are still pending.

How long should I expect my first appointment to be?

Most appointments are scheduled to last between 30 to 60 minutes, with the initial consultation typically set for one hour. However, depending on your pet’s condition, they may need to stay at the hospital longer if additional tests or treatments are required. Follow up chemotherapy sessions usually take about 45 minutes to an hour, except for IV infusions, which are handled as drop off appointments, allowing us to monitor your pet over a longer period. Our goal is to ensure your pet receives the best care possible while making the process as efficient as we can for you.

Will my primary care veterinarian remain part of my pet’s medical management?

We highly encourage you to maintain a strong relationship with your primary veterinarian throughout your pet’s treatment. We will keep them informed by sending a detailed report after each visit, ensuring they are up to date on your pet’s progress. Your veterinarian will continue to play a crucial role in managing your pet’s overall health, handling routine care and general medical needs. This collaborative approach allows us to work together to provide your pet with the most comprehensive and well-rounded care.
