Goldendoodle Fights for His Life After Rat Poison Exposure

The Expert Team at Advanced Veterinary Care Center Work Together to Save Papi

“I didn’t think he was going to make it,” recalls Dan Marino, of his dog Papi. Dan was out of town when he got a call from his mom, Claire, that his sweet goldendoodle was very ill. “He was throwing up, having trouble standing and a lot of different things,” adds Dan. So, when Papi could not stand, Claire took him right away to Advanced Veterinary Care Center’s 24-hour emergency hospital in Davie (Broward County).

Doctors at AVCC suspected internal bleeding. They asked about rat poison exposure. “He was shaking and could not maintain balance. My mom had rat poison traps in our yard. We have three dogs and they are out there every day. The idea that this could happen to Papi, did not occur to us. I was a wreck and completely beside myself. My mom was upset and felt really bad. The concern was, even if we could heal Papi, he may never be able to move again.”

Dan booked a flight home from California right away and Claire told him to prepare for the worst. The rat poison had been in Papi’s system for days. “But I was thinking to myself, of course the doctors are going to try to do whatever they can do. And that’s exactly what happened. Mentality is key. The doctors and nurses at AVCC had a great attitude about everything. They did not give up on him and put him at the top of their priority list immediately. It was the level of attention I would have given him. They had to do blood transfusions, lots of fluids, oxygen and more!”

Dan recalls the moment he got to see Papi for the first time. “I get to him and he lifts his head and starts panting. In that moment, he started to do a turnaround. I went to see him every 4 hours.” After a few days of hospitalization, Papi is doing great at home. “He’s very active,” adds Dan. “He’s a little quirky. He loves cuddling. He can jump and he is a hopper; in the air over and over. His energy is back. If anything, he became more energetic!”

And, Dan is especially grateful AVCC saved his furry best friend, with whom he shares a very special bond. “They were excellent. They were all very positive and honest. I had a lot of questions and they answered all of them. They really love and care about Papi. They brought him back from the brink and saved him!”
